Frequently Asked Questions

1. Q: How long does it take for FlyInjection Laboratory to complete injection of a construct and send back to me the the transformants?

A: We usually get transformants around 4-8 weeks after injection. Once we get the transformant, we will cross it to w118 flies so stable line can be established. After another 3 weeks or so, we will send you the established line. However, if the customers ask, we may send the tranformant embryos as soon as we get them (usually two weeks sooner).


2. Q: Will I get balanced or purified (homozygous transgene) lines?

A: The transformant lines are neither balanced nor homozygotized at the time we send back to you.


3. Q: Can I set up a corporate account with FlyInjection Laboratory?

A: Yes, your corporate account is well welcome.


4. Q: Besides w118 line, will you do fly injection using some other fly line like yw or ry?

A: We only use w118 for regular fly injections. You may easily to cross the transformants into other lines if necessary. However, if you need a special screening marker or fly lines for your transgenic work, we are happy to help you. Please send us an email to get a quote.


5. Q: Do I need to prepare my DNA using CsCl preparation?

A: CsCl DNA preparation is preferred method to obtain cleanest DNA, and it will help fly injection work, especially for large DNA constructs (i.e., construct size is larger than 10 kb. For small DNA constructs, we found DNA prepared using Qiagen Miniprep Kit is good for fly injection. No matter what method you use, please follow our recommended guideline for DNA preparation.


6. Q: Do I need to ship my DNA using dry ice?

A: No, it is not necessary unless you want to. You can just simply tape your DNA tubes (parafilming your tubes!) to a piece of paper and send it by regular Fedex envelope to us.
